Golden Lilac outclassed her rivals in the French 1000 Guineas (1600m) in May and she was just as impressive when stretching out to a one length victory in the French Oaks (2100m) at Chantilly on Sunday.
The unbeaten Galileo filly quickened to the lead in the straight and was beyond recall in the final furlong. The classic was another triumph for the Coolmore sire as Galikova closed with a rally to fill out the quinella. Glorious Sight (Singspiel) finished third.
Golden Lilac (3f Galileo – Grey Lilas by Danehill) emulated recent stars Divine Proportions and Zarkava in completing the Longchamp – Chantilly classic double for fillies.
Trainer Andre Fabre, who prepared Pour Moi (Montjeu) to win the English Derby a week ago, went into the French Oaks concerned that Golden Lilac wouldn’t stay the distance. “I really had doubts because her dam Grey Lilas was a fast filly who was best at a mile,” he said. “Now it seems the obvious progression is the Prix Vermeille (2400m) in September.”
Golden Lilac is bred on the same Galileo – Danehill cross as English 2000 Guineas winner Frankel and races for Gestut Ammerland owner-breeder Dietrich Von Boetticher.
The Oaks winner scored two late season juvenile contests at Saint Cloud at two and resumed with a G3 victory in the Prix de la Grotte at Longchamp in April before adding the French 1000 Guineas.
Gestut Ammerland and Fabre dominated the French classics with homebred colt Lope De Vega last year. The Shamardal star won the French 2000 Guineas – Derby double and will cover his first southern book at Patinack Farm this spring.
