The foal section of the Inglis Great Southern Sale concluded at Oakland Junction on Tuesday afternoon when Day 2 takings reached $1.70 million. That was almost identical to the Day 1 figure with the average up 22% and the clearance rate climbing even higher to 90%.
It brought the foal sale total to $3.41 million with 318 weanlings selling at an average of $10,731 and an overall clearance rate of 86%. The sale median of $5,000 remained at more than twice the level achieved in 2009.
“In some respects, the sale was even stronger today, considering the outstanding clearance rate and we have to regard the weanling session as a very successful sale,” Inglis Director Peter Heagney said on Tuesday evening. “Obviously we had some pin-hookers here, but I think there are also a lot of people who like to buy these horses now and wait a little longer, rather than paying the extra premium that comes at a yearling sale.”
Day 2 was topped by Darley’s Lonhro filly from the Sadler’s Wells mare Theatre School which went to New Zealand’s Paul Willets for $73,000. It completed a good sale for Darley stallions, with Lonhro’s progeny filling the top two positions and Commands having the third highest price of the sale.
Horses passed in over the past two days are still available for sale via the Inglis Make an Offer service. The Broodmare section of the Great Southern Sale begins from 11am on Wednesday.
