Lonhro lands Albury Guineas

Lee Freedman made amends for missing out in the Albury Cup on Friday when Darley gelding The Ruffian scored a feature victory in the Albury Guineas.

Freedman won the 1989 Albury Cup with Abstraction but was denied a repeat result when Speed Gifted finished third to Paddy O’Reilly and Extra Zero
The Ruffian (3g Lonhro – Rose Of Danehill by Danehill) had gone 10 starts since winning on debut at Kyneton in March 2010.  In the meantime, he earned black-type when runner-up to Stirling Grove in the G3 South Australian Sires’ Produce Stakes and he also split Anacheeva and Bullbars in the Listed McKenzie Stakes at Moonee Valley.

The Ruffian started an odds-on favourite in the Guineas and he continued the winning run of Lonhro at the Albury carnival.  The Darley sire topped an tailed Thursday’s City Handicap meeting with Odin’s Hammer and Katisam.

Former Darley shuttler Tobougg chimed in with City Hcp winner Berringama.

The Ruffian’s dam Rose Of Danehill was a G2 winner of the VRC Kewney Stakes and Edward Manifold Stakes and she is a half-sister to G1 MVRC William Reid Stakes winner Wrap Around (Bletchingly).

Freedman trained Rose Of Danehill for the Roselands Syndicate, a Victorian off-shoot of Vinery, in the late 1990s.  Vinery sold her to Woodlands for $500,000 at the 2005 Inglis Easter Broodmare Sale.

Rose Of Danehill has a yearling filly by Red Ransom but missed to Street Cry the following year.  She was bred back to him at Darley Kelvinside in October.
