Talented Macau based gelding Northern Champion cruised home to a career-best victory in the Listed Lisboa Challenge (1500m) on Saturday.
Northern Champion (3g Mugharreb – Ascot Prancer by Ascot Knight) was winning for the third time at his fifth start in Macau He was purchased by Jenny Gow-Whyte for just $2,250 from the Riverside Stud draft at the 2009 Adelaide Magic Millions.
After an eye-catching trial at Morphettville last July, the Port Lincoln trainer sold him to clients of trainer Vincent Chong.
His sire Mugharreb (Gone West) is based at Ralph Satchell’s Willow Grove Stud in South Australia. He stands alongside Mint Lane (Maria’s Mon) at the Woodside nursery north of Oakbank.
Mugharreb (USA) has sired the winners of 53 races in his first three crops.
Northern Champion was ridden by Fausto Durso and won by over a length from stakes winner Oriental Taste (Dubleo) and Golden Spiritual (Captain Rio).
