Belscenica revived memories of a major Moonee Valley upset when she won the Travis Harrison Apprentices Cup on Saturday.

Belscenica is a three-quarter sister to Piavonic who defeated mighty mare Sunline and champion sprinter Falvelon in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes in August 2001.

Like Piavonic, the MVRC Apprentices Cup winner is by former Durham Lodge sire Scenic and is trained by Tony Noonan for owner-breeder John Thatcher.

Belscenica (5m Scenic – Bellonic by Redding) angled off the fence turning for home and then claimed the favourite Das Machen to score by three-quarters of a length.  She is right at home at the Moonee Ponds track winning three of her five starts on the StrathAyr.

Bellonic has also foaled the Moonee Valley winner Ozolins (Scenic) and her latest foal is a filly by God’s Own.

Piavonic has continued the excellent work for the Thatcher family at stud.  She has a 100% record with Von Costa De Hero the best of her three winners to date.

Von Costa De Hero (Encosta de Lago) was a G2 winner of the Victorian Sires’ Produce Stakes and he was also runner-up in the G1 STC Golden Slipper Stakes and G1 VRC Australian Guineas.  He is the latest addition to Darley’s roster and will command a $16,500 service fee at Northwood Park in Victoria this year.
