Mastercraftsman has been retired after his unplaced run in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. He bowed out after finishing fourth to Furthest Land (Smart Strike) at Santa Anita last Saturday. He will stand for a 20,000 euros service fee at Coolmore Stud in 2010.
Mastercraftsman (Danehill Dancer) won four of his five juvenile starts including a Group 1 double in the 2008 Phoenix Stakes and National Stakes at the Curragh.
Returning as a three year-old this term, he was a Group 1 winner of the Irish 2000 Guineas and St. James’s Palace Stakes but was unable to match champion colt Sea The Stars in the English 2000 Guineas, Juddmonte International and Irish Champion Stakes.
“Mastercraftsman was a top class racehorse winning four Group 1 races from 1200m to a mile,” Coolmore’s Irish manager Christy Grassick said. “He’s a European champion two-year-old by champion sire-elect Danehill Dancer and comes from the family of champion sires Capote and Broad Brush.”
Trained throughout his career at Ballydoyle by Aidan O’Brien, Mastercraftsman retires with a 12: 7-1-1 career card and over US$1.75 million in prizemoney.
He will be joined on Coolmore’s 2010 roster by four-time Ascot Gold Cup (G1) hero Yeats (Sadler’s Wells) who will stand at a fee of 10,000 euros.
Arlington Million winner Powerscourt, who had been based at Coolmore’s Kentucky arm at Ashford Stud, will transfer to head office in Ireland following the emergence of his G1 Moyglare Stud Stakes winner Termagant.
Powerscourt and high-flying sire High Chaparral, both sons of Sadler’s Wells, are the only Coolmore stallions who have had their fees increased for 2010.
Coolmore’s leading trio Danehill Dancer, Galileo and Montjeu remain private for the 2010 season. Another 12 stallions have had their fees reduced. One Cool Cat has been sold to stand in South Korea.
