McFlirt hits Accelerator

Mungrup Stud sire McFlirt consolidated his position in the Top 5 on the Sunspeed sires’ premiership at Belmont on Saturday.

His homebred colt Accelarometer was narrowly beaten in the LR Belmont Guineas (1600m) before flashy chestnut Frenchman came out and scored a convincing victory in the TabOzbet Hcp (1300m).

McFlirt (NZ) has sired 30 winners of 50 races and $847,000 this season.  That puts him in fifth place behind Blackfriars, Oratorio (Aus), Viscount and Key Business among active sires in Western Australia.

Frenchman (5g McFlirt – French Vanilla by General Monash) is on a roll after winning two in a row at Belmont and trainer Justin Warwick has found the key to him since the move south-west to Myalup.

“I took him over in April and he can be ordinary out of the gates,” Warwick admitted.  “I told Shaun (Meeres) not to push too early because he does have a turn of foot.  He starting to work it all out now and should get a good 1600 metres.”

Frenchman is the first foal of French Vanilla who was raced by Tony Patrizi, Ron Sayers, Lex Piper and Todd Harvey.  Her career was cut short after winning second time out at York in May 2005.

Piper bred Frenchman and retained him after bidding fell short of a $20,000 reserve at the 2008 Perth Autumn Magic Millions.  The Harveys also have a share and Todd trains Frenchman’s younger half-sister Rouge Dior (Stormy’s Son) for Piper and his wife Shirley.  She has won twice from just four starts at Ascot and Belmont this year.

French Vanilla boards at Mungrup and she has a yearling colt by McFlirt and was covered by Due Sasso last year.

Frenchman put the writing on the wall for a winning hat-trick shortly after Accelarometer went down fighting in the LR Belmont Guineas.  He was brave in defeat when beaten a long head by WA Derby winner Rohan.

Accelarometer (3c McFlirt – Recoverable by Metal Storm) had won a Bunbury maiden in March for Mungrup’s Gray and Jan Williamson and looked right at home in stakes company.  He comes from a Mungrup Stud family that includes the stakes sisters Eastern Zone and National Silk.

Recoverable has a weanling colt by Vital Equine and was covered by Oratorio (Aus) last October.

McFlirt stands for a $3,300 (inc gst) fee at Mungrup and he combines the best of the best bloodlines from New Zealand.  He’s a son of G1 winner Kaapstad (Sir Tristram – Eight Carat) and his damsire McGinty was a G1 winning son of Champion NZ sire One Pound Sterling.

His second dam was by Gold Sovereign (Grey Sovereign) from a grand-daughter of Trelawney Stud’s 11 time champion Foxbridge.
