Country cups star Indamani will be one of the favourites to collect more silverware in the $100,000 Broome Cup (2200m) this Saturday.
Indamani (6g McFlirt – Biraka Girl by Serheed) claimed his second Port Hedland Cup a fortnight ago and can go one better on the Pearl Coast this time around. He was beaten three-quarters of a length by Marseillaise (Lonhro) in last year’s Broome Cup.
Indamani’s trainer Anne King and Mungrup Stud stalwart McFlirt have claimed three of the last four Port Hedland Cups. Flirtson won the first of them in 2010.
King took over from trainer Adam Durrant after Indamani was unplaced in the LR Roberts Quality at Ascot in March 2011. Durrant can still win the Broome Cup – he owns Greatwall Of China (Giant’s Causeway) who won the Roebourne Cup in July.
Meanwhile, McFlirt gelding When We Were Kings will butter up in the Perth Racing Hcp (1400m) at Belmont this Saturday. He completed a winning hat-trick last weekend and is finally fulfilling the promise he showed as a two and three year-old.
When We Were Kings (6g McFlirt – Elata by Tribu) is from a half-sister to G3 WATC Champion Fillies winner Calophylla (Magellan). “He’s racing with plenty of confidence,” trainer Greg Kersley said. “He’s never been fitter and can lead or take a sit.
“He’s always shown ability but kept getting injured as a younger horse. We’ve got him ticking over nicely now.”
McFlirt (Kaapstad) will stand for a $3,300 (inc gst) service fee at Mungrup Stud this year.
