Mill Ridge mishap claims Johar

Former New Zealand shuttler Johar has died after a paddock accident at Mill Ridge Farm in Kentucky.  The son of Gone West from Group 1 mare Windsharp (Lear Fan) was 15.

Johar (USA) dead-heated with High Chaparral in the 2003 Breeders’ Cup Turf for Prince Ahmed Salman and trainer Richard Mandella.  He had also won the 2002 Hollywood Derby.

Shuttling to Highview Stud for two season in 2005-06, he sired feature winners Guiseppina (G1 Telegraph Hcp), Folding Gear (G2 Caulfield Autumn Classic), Hiace (G2 City Of Auckland Cup), Fazzle (G2 Auckland TBA Stakes) and Veronica Franco (G3 Eulogy Stakes).

In North America, his progeny included G1Breeders’ Futurity winner Joha and Canadian champion Tu Endie Wei.

“It’s a sad day…Johar was with us a long time having been raised here,” Mill Ridge Farm’s Headley Bell said.  “He reached the pinnacle in the Breeders’ Cup Turf and will be buried alongside Gone West here at Mill Ridge.
