Mizzen Mast popular at Ocala Breeders’ 2YO Sale

Returns maintained a strong upward curve on Day 2 of the Ocala Breeders’ 2YO Sale in Florida on Tuesday.

Ocala reported turnover of $7.16 million at an average price that increased 8% to $33,465 compared to Day 2 last year.  The clearance rate dropped 6 points to 77%.

EQB agent Patrice Miller paid $240,000 to acquire the session topping Mizzen Mast colt.  He is out of the unraced Unbridled mare Copper Rose who is a half sister to former Heytesbury Stud shuttler Namaqualand (Mr. Prospector).  The colt had been a $60,000 buy as a foal at the 2009 Keeneland November Sale.

Mizzen Mast, who stands for $12,500 at Juddmonte Farms in Lexington, was a popular sire at Tuesday’s session.

Next best on the leader board at $210,000 was a Mizzen Mast filly purchased by Emmanuel de Seroux of Narvick International.  Her dam Baby Lets Cruise (Tale of the Cat) is a half-sister to G1 racehorse and sire Jade Hunter.

Coolmore shuttler Johannesburg was responsible for the third highest lot at $190,000.  His filly out of the unraced Mr. Prospector mare Born Perfect was purchased by Anthony Goswell as agent for Harlequin Ranches.

“The sale started strong and finished strong,” Ocala president Tom Ventura said.  “We had three horses bring over $100,000 in both the first 20 lots and the last 20 lots.  Hopefully, we can keep it up the next two days.”

The Ocala Breeders’ 2YO Sale continues through to Thursday.
