Saturday’s Caulfield card supplied a couple of significant updates for Sheamus Mills Bloodstock (FBAA) starting with the first-up victory of Creativity.
She will be set for the G3 Proud Miss Stakes at Morphettville on May 19 after cruising home for trainers Mat Ellerton and Simon Zahra. They have been patient with the Master Of Design mare who had earned black-type earlier in her career at Flemington.
Creativity was sidelined following knee surgery last year and had been sent back to the trials after refusing to enter the gates at Flemington on New Year’s Day. “She used to have a blindfold and a stallion chain but went into today’s race naked,” Ellerton said. “She was stakes placed at two and hopefully we can win a black-type race in Adelaide.”
SMB bought her yearling half-sister by Toronado from Sun Stud for $120,000 at the 2018 Inglis Melbourne Premier.
Persuader earned valuable black-type for Mills and Newton Thoroughbreds in the LR Redoute’s Choice Stakes at Caulfield. Having just her second start, the Mick Price-trained youngster motored home into third and looks to have a bright a future given how she hit the line.
She cost $360,000 at the 2017 Magic Millions from Widden Stud who confirmed the filly was the one that Mills was always keen on at the Gold Coast. The Zoustar filly is from the family of G1 Golden Slipper Stakes winner Crystal Lily.
Recent SMB buy Casino Club wasted no time paying her way with a first-up win for McEvoy Mitchell Racing at Gawler on Anzac Day. Backed from $2.60 into a $1.85 favourite, she broke a run of 13 outs to win the Gallipoli Memorial Trophy (2100m).
“Sheamus purchased Casino Club for a racing and breeding career,” assistant trainer Calvin McEvoy said. “She came into the stable with a good fitness level and settled in smoothly at Kildalton Park. Now we will look for a suitable city race and it would be great if we could pick up some black type.”
Casino Club (4m Casino Prince – Volted In by Rory’s Jester) is from a half-sister to Drum (G1 Oakleigh Plate) & Anamato (G1 Australasian Oaks) and the dams of Group 1 winners Grand Armee & Dealer Principal.
Mills was also on the leader-board at the VOBIS Gold yearling Sale in Melbourne on April 22. He paid fourth highest-price of $75,000 for an I Am Invincible filly on behalf of Warrnambool trainer Matthew Williams.
Offered by Burnewang North Pastoral, she is the first foal out of juvenile winner Jewel Heist (Dane Shadow). “She cut a leg and that held her back from Melbourne Premier,” vendor Cathy Hains said. “Sheamus is a great judge and Matt is a great trainer so she couldn’t be in better hands.”
