Dan Morton isn’t fazed by the daunting task of taking on boom filly Atlantic Jewel and world champion Black Caviar during the Melbourne Cup carnival.
The Perth trainer will saddle up Bliss Street in the G2 Wakeful Stakes at Flemington tomorrow and Scenic Blast in the G1 Patinack Classic on Saturday week.
Bliss Street heads an outstanding crop of three year-olds by Flying Spur and the Arrowfield stalwart will be two-handed in the Wakeful with Gliding also engaged.
Gliding is owned and trained by Bart Cummings and she is a last start winner of the G3 Ethereal Stakes at Caulfield.
Bliss Street won the G3 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Caulfield last month and since then she has been runner-up in a G2 at Flemington and a Listed event at Moonee Valley.
“She pulled up well after Moonee Valley and I’m very happy with her,” Morton said. “After the Wakeful, we will send her back to Perth for the WA Guineas on November 19.”
Bliss Street races for Perth breeders Eddie Rigg (Geisel Park) and Ron Sayers (Yarradale Stud) in partnership with Yarraman Park. Morton bought her for $100,000 at last year’s Gold Coast Magic Millions.
Morton has no illusions about the task ahead in the Wakeful Stakes but he is adopting the same philosophy as wily trainer Clarry Connors.
Connors prepares Flying Spur filly Satin Shoes who is up against star colt Sepoy in the G1 Coolmore Stakes on Saturday. “The Coolmore has always been the grand final for Satin Shoes,” Connors said. “Sepoy is a terrific horse but even the great ones can have an off day.”
Meanwhile, Morton produced promising Flying Spur three year-old Hartley’s Hangover to win the Westspeed 3YO Hcp at Ascot on Wednesday.
Hartley’s Hangover won eased down and the colt can climb the grades now that he’s found the line. He is owned by popular racing identity Bernie Stephens who founded the Hartley Estate boutique winery in the Chittering Valley.
Hartley’s Hangover is a younger half-brother to Bellbridge Park stallion Hartley’s Spirit (Danetime). Stephens stands him in conjunction with Bellbridge owners Michael and Siobhan Campbell.
Their dam Prohurst is a half sister to G1 Railway Stakes winner Machine Gun Tom and the dam of G1 Melbourne Cup winner Rogan Josh.
