Appropriately named Chasing Charlie had his rivals doing exactly that with a front-running victory in the Slickpix Plate (1000m) at Canberra on Friday.
Trained in partnership by Barb Joseph and Paul Jones, Chasing Charlie started a short-priced favourite on debut to give Myboycharlie his second winner in less than a week.
Myboycharlie youngster Charlie Boy had opened the winning account of his sire at Rosehill last Saturday. The Vinery sire’s only other runner to date has been talented filly Artistic Lass who impressed with a city placing on debut in November.
Chasing Charlie (2g Myboycharlie – Sophistocat by Catrail) was five lengths clear approaching the home turn and had his rivals off the bit before dramatically shying away from the fence in the straight. Jockey Carl Spry managed to straighten his mount and still maintain a comfortable advantage to the line.
Chasing Charlie cost $50,000 at the 2012 Inglis Melbourne Premier yearling sale. His dam Sophistocat won at Randwick (2), Warwick Farm and Kensington and also finished second in the Listed STC Triscay Stakes (1200m). She is a close relation of G1 Oakleigh Plate winner Swiss Ace.
Sophistocat has a sister to Chasing Charlie catalogued in the Amarina Farm draft for the Inglis Classic yearling sale in January.
“It’s a tremendous start for Myboycharlie,” Vinery’s Adam White said. “Chasing Charlie was ultra impressive. He’s very green but has a great free running style and is very athletic which is a trait of the Myboycharlies.”
Myboycharlie (Danetime) was Champion French 2YO in 2007 and Vinery is standing him for a ($8,800 inc gst) service fee.
