New Foal record at Great Southern Sale

Vinery champion More Than Ready has created a new record for a foal in Victoria at the Inglis Melbourne Great Southern Sale.

Steve Jostlear of Ampulla Lodge paid $310,000 for More Than Ready’s colt from Group 3 performer Calming Influence (Commands) on Sunday. It eclipsed the previous record, also held by Ampulla, for an Exceed And Excel colt that made $300,000 in 2015.

“He’s a spectacular colt, equal to if not the best I’ve seen at any sale anywhere this year,” Jostlear said after opening the bidding at $200,000. “I stood and watched him for nearly two hours earlier today, to check on his temperament.

“He was very popular but he didn’t bat an eye lid. He had every chance to spit the dummy, and probably should have at times, but he was dead-set perfect. On top of that he had perfect x-rays and a great pedigree.”

Jostlear’s wife Ceri Jostlear confirmed the colt (pictured) will be catalogued again as a yearling either at the Gold Coast in January or at the new Riverside Stables in April. “We didn’t want to pay that much, but we knew we would have to dig deep with all the big names on him,” she said. “He’s got everything; he’s a type, he’s got the walk, the look, he’s beautiful.

“He’s by a proven sire. More Than Ready does a good job all around the world and he’s becoming a good broodmare sire and he’s becoming a good sire of sires, so he’s got it all.”
