New Sensation lands plunge at Ascot

Rocking Society is ticking every box as he continues to develop into a stayer the equal of his of his older brother Red Sun Sensation.

Saturday’s opening winner at Ascot is trained by Jason Miller for a syndicate managed by his wife Sarah and there was a lot to like about his performance after firming from $14 into a $4.10 favourite for the Racing Towards Better Hcp (1800m).

“I didn’t have a bet,” Miller claimed after the plunge paid off.  “I thought he was under the odds but the smart money got it right.  I was waiting until he got over 2000m and further.  It was a good staying test today with the speed on and he took the field up to the leader.

“He’s tough and longer distances will be right up his alley.”

Rocking Society (4g Awesome Rock – Society Gal by Faltaat) was bred and sold by Gold Front Thoroughbreds for $110,000 at the 2022 Perth Magic Millions.  His older brother Red Sun Sensation won to Group 3 level in last year’s SAJC Chairmans Stakes (2000m) for trainer Peter Moody before being repatriated to Gold Front owners Alan and Sue Olive earlier this season.

Rocking Society had signalled staying ability when finishing fifth behind A Lot Of Good Men (A Lot) in the G2 WATC Derby (2400m) in April.  He put the writing on the wall with placing at his first two runs this prep and was on hand to take advantage of the tearaway tactics employed Five Down (Better Than Ready) on Saturday.

“They ran along but he was never really under the pump,” winning jockey Lucy Fiore reported.  “I gave him a squeeze at the 700m and there was a lot of horse left.”

Rocking Society was in danger of being pocketed by Lethal Weapon (Maschino) until he pushed out at the top of the straight.  He reeled in the leader soon enough but was all out at the finish to deny the late sorties of Central Force (Toronado) and War Matters (War Chant).

His NZ-bred dam Society Gal is a sister to Sight Winner (Faltaat) who won the G1 HKJC Champions Mile for trainer John Size in 2009.  She delivered LR Belmont Oaks winner Chilli Is Hot (Gingerbread Man) before Awesome Rock retired to Gold Front and Red Sun Sensation was their first foal together in 2019.

Rocking Society was next to arrive followed by Pearce Racing’s 2yo colt Rock Fest who was a $55,000 buy at this year’s Perth Magic Millions.  Gold Front office manager Naomi Montuolo reports their yearling colt has been entered for Book 1 of the 2025 Perth Magic Millions in February and the mare is back in foal to Awesome Rock off an early cover this season.
