Newhaven Park signs Xtravagant

Newhaven Park has secured Champion New Zealand colt Xtravagant for stud duties in Australia.

A sensational 8 length debut winner at his only start at two, Xtravagant won the G1 NZ 2000 Guineas by another 8 lengths in race record time before beating older horses in the G1 Waikato Sprint, again by an extraordinary margin of 8 lengths.

“He was a breathtaking racehorse with phenomenal speed,” Newhaven Park’s John Kelly said.  “He’s a superb looking individual with a truly international pedigree that is an outcross for Australia’s Danehill line mares – we thought he was a wonderful opportunity that should not be missed.”

Xtravagant will stand for a fee of $15,000.  He’s a full brother to Group 1 performer He’s Remarkable and his 3yo half-sister Axiomatic (O’Reilly) is regarded as a likely stakes performer during the autumn for Chris Waller.

“His first two dams are by champion sires Zabeel and Centaine and he has all the attributes we look for in a stallion,” Kelly added.  “We look forward to presenting him to Australian breeders this year.”

Xtravagant (Pentire) caught the eye of David Ellis and others at the 2014 Karaka yearling sale where he was knocked down for $375,000.  A stunning colt, he went on to win 6 of his 12 starts for Ellis and Te Akau Racing trainers Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards.

“Xtravagant is certainly one of the most exciting three year olds that Te Akau has had in the last 35 years,” Ellis declared.  “He’s the highest rated 3YO in New Zealand since Bonecrusher and is a wonderful example of equine excellence.”
