Niagara burst into contention for the G1 Doncaster with a stunning win in Saturday’s G2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on Saturday.
On a big afternoon for champion trainer Gai Waterhouse, Niagara lived up to his looks and pedigree when thumping his rivals by three and a half lengths. The Encosta de Lago colt has always been held in high regard by connections since graduating from the 2010 Gold Coast Magic Millions for $620,000.
“He was a magnificent yearling and has a physique to die for,” Waterhouse told reporters after the race. “He wasn’t quite furnished in the spring when beaten a nostril in the Sandown Guineas but he will be hard to beat in whatever we go for now.”
Niagara (3c Encosta de Lago – River Song by Fusaichi Pegasus) is the 87th individual stakes winner for his sire and his dam is a half sister to the Group winning juvenile Murjana as well the dam of G1 winner Gathering.
Niagara’s third dam is none other than Dancing Show – the dam of Umatilla and Hurricane Sky and second dam of Redoute’s Choice, Manhattan Rain and Al Maher.
