(NZ) mare lands La Trice

John Chalmers turned the clock back 28 years when Celebrity Dream won the G3 La Trice Classic (1800m) on Perth Cup Day.

A successful bloodstock agent for many years in Perth, he paid $260,000 for Celebrity Dream (NZ) on behalf of owners Bob and Sandra Peters from Haunui Farm at the 2014 Karaka Yearling Sale.

Back in 1991, Chalmers fulfilled a dream when he led Mirror Magic back to scale after her victory in the G1 Perth Cup. The NZ-bred was the best staying mare of her generation in Western Australia.

Mirror Magic (Lord Ballina) won 7 races from 1100m to 3200m and, apart from the Perth Cup – which was a Group 1 in the 1990s – she was also successful in the G1 WA Derby and G2 C B Cox Stakes.

Sold to Japan, Mirror Magic foaled the dam of Keep Away (Air Jihad) who won 13 times topped by the LR Committee’s Prize in Singapore.

Celebrity Dream (6m Thorn Park – Valpolicella by Red Ransom) has won 10 races from 1000m to 1800m including Listed strikes in the Jungle Dawn Classic (2), Jungle Mist Classic and Starstruck Classic. She gave trainer Adam Durrant his fifth victory in the La Trice and the cerise and while colours saluted for the fourth time in its last six editions.

“The right barrier helped today,” Peters explained. “She was stuck wide last time and that led to queries about her ability to get 1800m. We were considering the Summer Scorcher but we pulled the right rein for the longer distance.”

John Chalmers Bloodstock (FBAA) struck again on Thursday when veteran sprinter Cranky Dancer won the GWN Hcp (1413m) at Geraldton.

Trained by Willie Parker, the 9yo war-horse improved his record to 10 wins in 66 starts since being purchased by Chalmers for $18,000 from Mogumber Park at the 2011 Perth Magic Millions.
