Oaklands set for second Derby

Oaklands Stud owner Neville Stewart has sold hundreds of winners out of the Magic Millions sale-ring on the Gold Coast but none with as much potential as G1 AJC Derby winner Shoot Out.

Shoot Out (High Chaparral) is raced by Graham and Lindy Huddy and will be named Australia’s Champion 3YO Stayer for 2009-10.  He has earned prizemoney in excess of $1.34 million which isn’t a bad return for a horse that Stewart sold for just $15,000 at the 2008 Magic Millions.

While Shoot Out is spelling in readiness for the spring carnivals, Oaklands can capture a second classic this year with Sanderson in the G1 Queensland Derby on June 12.

Sanderson (3g Iglesia – Princess Tatsuta by Fuji Kiseki) scored a thrilling G3 victory in the Gunsynd Classic (1600m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday and trainer Kelly Doughty is confident the lightly-raced gelding can make the grade.  “I always thought he would make into a Derby horse and he’s a step closer now,” Doughty explained on the weekend.  “I gave him two lead-up runs so he would be ready for the mile.”

Sanderson was a bargain-basement $3,000 buy from the Oaklands consignment at the 2009 Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Summer Sale.  He was bred by Stewart’s 16 year-old son Alexander who was tragically killed in a bike accident almost 12 months ago.

Sanderson’s next lead-up to the Queensland Derby will be in the Rough Habit Plate (2020m) at Doomben on May 15.

Oaklands sire Ferocity has covered the dams of Shoot Out and Sanderson in the last two years.  He has two younger half-sisters to the AJC Derby winner and the yearling made $160,000 at the 2010 Gold Coast Magic Millions.

Sanderson’s dam Princess Tatsuta has a 2yo gelding named Royal Lion and a yearling filly that has been retained by Oaklands.

Stewart hand-picked Ferocity to carry on the Lion Hunter sireline at Oaklands.  He was a G2 winner of the VRC Ascot Vale Stakes at Flemington before it was elevated to the elite level.  He is also a brother to the dam of this year’s G1 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Star Witness.

Ferocity’s first crop are up and running and Gold Coast filly Vexed increased his individual winner tally to four when she scored on debut at Ipswich last week.

Ferocity’s half-sister to Shoot Out has been his most expensive yearling to date although he did have another filly change hands for six figures at the Yarradale Stud yearling sale last Monday.  The Ferocity – City Living youngster made $120,000 to the bid of leading Perth trainer Lindsey Smith.  She is a half-sister to WA stakes winners Diamond Dash (Hennessy) and Metro Miss (Xaar).

The good news coming for Oaklands last week when Been Broke Before scored second-up on Anzac Day.  He entered the books as the first winner for Redoute’s Choice sire Break The Vault who stands at Oaklands for a $6,600 (inc gst) service fee.

Oaklands Stud has a large draft of 33 foals at the upcoming Magic Millions National weanling sale on the Gold Coast.  Ferocity and Break The Vault are there in numbers along with the second-crop foals of Oaklands residents All Bar One and Chateau Istana (GB).
