Old Firm wins with King of the Castle

Breeding a winner is as safe as houses when Champion Sire Safeguard covers super mare Clarecastle (Tribu) at Mogumber Park.

Clarecastle foaled outstanding filly Specialism out of Safeguard’s initial book at Bullsbrook in 2015 and she was instrumental when he claimed the WA 2YO and Freshman titles in 2018-19.

Raced by Harvey Crossman’s Lima Syndicate, Specialism was the first of five winners in as many years for the pair and they can go to another level with Castle Road who wasn’t for running down in the Magic Millions Plate (1000m) at Ascot on Saturday.

Castle Road won like a professional on debut for the ‘Old Firm’ of Mogumber Park owners Colin Brown and Fiona Lacey, trainer Paul Jordan and his wife Laura plus husband-and-wife jockeys Craig and Lisa Staples.

“Paul has been excited about him from the off,” Laura Jordan revealed as the first-starter returned to scale minus an off-fore plate..  “He’s a brother to Specialism and is still learning.  He can be exuberant but is otherwise lovely to deal with and we’re delighted with that win.”

Winning jockey Craig Staples was also positive after the front-running three-length victory over close relation and fellow Mogumber Park-bred youngster Do I Feel Lucky (Dirty Work).  The runner-up is a son of Castle Road’s older full-sister Mindarie (Safeguard).

“I love the mare and have won on all her foals,” Staples said.  “He has to learn to get around the corner but all I had to do was steer.  Thanks to Lisa, too.  He threw me that hard at the track one morning I was nearly buried.

“Now she rides him in the mornings and I just jump aboard on raceday.  She loves him and reckons he’s a star.”

Castle Road banked $84,540 including Westspeed bonuses of $40,700 on Saturday and Mogumber Park has a Safeguard – Clarecastle yearling filly entered for the 2025 Perth Magic Millions.  The mare’s latest foal is a first-crop colt by Marine One (Capitalist).

Colin Brown can be confident of further updates with Castle Road before parading his younger sister at the Swan Valley in February.  “He has the makings of a very good horse,” Brown predicted.  “He’s very raw but an imposing type.”

Safeguard is also making an impact in Hong Kong with Kyrus Dragon his first millionaire for owner Wong Ying Sheung and trainer David Hall .  He was denied a hat-trick when runner-up to Aurora Lady (Star Witness) during the International Jockeys’ Championship (1200m) at Sha Tin last Wednesday but the minor purse sent his earnings to the equivalent of AUD1.04 million.

Kyrus Dragon has been joined by Safeguard expats Laserblanca and Star Satyr who are both at the trot and canter stage after arriving from Australia in October.  If there is a liking for the Safeguards in Hong Kong, it will add another dimension for those that breed or buy his stock.

Laserblanca (3g Safeguard – Kuda Cepat by O’Reilly) was initially purchased by Patrick Payne for $90,000 from Mogumber Park at the 2023 Perth Magic Millions.  He was placed in a Echuca trial in August and was sold to clients of trainer John Size.

Star Satyr (3g Safeguard – Fairy Nymph by Equiano) is with Tony Cruz following a very impressive juvenile debut at Belmont in July when racing as Safe Satyr for trainer Meryl Hayley.
