Ole Kirk voted Australia’s 3YO Champion Colt

Vinery stallion Ole Kirk has been named Champion Australian 3YO Colt at the 2020-21 Racehorse of the Year Awards.

Due to COVID restrictions, Monday evening’s ceremony couldn’t be held in person unlike previous years when his illustrious close relations Black Caviar and All Too Hard received similar honours.

Ole Kirk defeated a hot field of 3yo finalists comprising Mo’unga, Rothfire, Explosive Jack, Johnny Get Angry, Wild Ruler, Lion’s Roar, Peltzer and Lunar Fox.

He’s a son of Champion sire Written Tycoon and his dam Naturale (Bel Esprit) is a full-sister to iconic filly Black Caviar and a half-sister to Vinery’s Group 1 racehorse and sire All Too Hard.

Ole Kirk was instrumental in handing Written Tycoon his first Australian sires’ premiership in 2020-21.  The Team Hawkes-prepared colt was his chief earner ($1,989,050) during a season highlighted by Group 1 victories in the ATC Golden Rose (1400m) and MRC Caulfield Guineas (1600m).

He joined a Vinery roster already home to Team Hawkes stars All Too Hard, Headwater, Star Turn and Exceedance.  “They give their horses time and allow them to come to their top naturally,” Vinery Stud General Manager Peter Orton said.  “They’ve trained quite a few of our stallions and they always come to us very fresh and keen.”

Those comments were borne out when Ole Kirk’s first batch of mares in September were all scanned in foal.

“Ole Kirk was certainly the best colt of his generation and is going to get the best of opportunities as a match so many mares,” Orton continued.  “The sire line is working so well and Black Caviar being in the family makes it known worldwide.  It’s a pedigree that would fit in anywhere.”

Ole Kirk (pictured) leads the Vinery roster at a $55,000 service fee alongside All Too Hard ($33,000), Exceedance ($33,000), Headwater ($16,500), Star Turn ($16,500), Press Statement ($13,750) and Casino Prince ($5,500).  All fees inc GST.  Payment on live foal.
