Optimistic overview of Tattersalls December Sale

Turnover on Day 4 of the Tattersalls December Mare Sale wouldn’t have been enough to buy Tuesday’s 1.30 million guineas sale-topper Diary.  The low-budget session totalled just 837,800 guineas but it took the four day breeding stock sale to 644 lots sold for 34.54 million guineas at an average of 53,641 guineas which was up 1% on last year.

Thursday’s session was headed by Trickledown Stud’s Paul Thorman who bought Phoenix Rising for 35,000 guineas.  The four year-old mare is a daughter of 1989 Cheveley Park Stakes winner Dead Certain and was sold in foal to Compton Place.

“The demand for broodmares and fillies this week has exceeded expectations,” Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented.  “The two dispersals from Bloomsbury Stud and Pendley Farm were among the highlights.

“The feature of the sale was the extraordinary level of participation from overseas buyers with buyers from almost 40 different countries.

“The global bloodstock industry, in common with so many others, continues to face challenges, but the Tattersalls December Sale has yet again given cause for a measure of optimism and a timely reminder that quality bloodstock remains as sought after as ever.”
