Passion Cantata gave a great sight in the G3 Champion Fillies on November 17 and she buttered up with a well-deserved victory in the Bulmers Hcp (1400m) at Ascot on Saturday.
The Paul Jordan trained filly overhauled front-runner Royal Inferno in the straight to score by more than two lengths. “She’s a terrific filly,” Jordan claimed. “Sound, consistent and a good doer – a trainer’s delight.”
Passion Cantata is by Mungrup Stud sire Oratorio out of Scenic mare Sanabresa. His dam has produced three winners from three foals by Oratorio. Sanabresa boards at Mungrup and she has a 2yo filly by Danehill Express and a weanling colt by Red Hot Choice.
“She ran a game race in the Champion Fillies and only got run down in the last little bit,” Jordan added. “She could have finished second but had to work getting across and that was the difference.”
Jordan had contemplated a start in the G2 WA Guineas but opted for the easier assignment on Super Saturday after drawing wide again. “Racing for the Westspeed bonus made it an easier decision,” he explained. “She cost $80,000 as a yearling and the bonuses have helped her earn over $180,000.”
Oratorio (Stravinsky) is an older half-brother to Group 1 winning mare Sea Siren who flies out to Hong Kong on Monday for the G1 International Sprint at Sha Tin on December 9.
Mungrup stands Oratorio for a $22,000 (inc gst) service fee.
