Our Maizcay put down at Minumurra Stud

1995 Caulfield Guineas winner Our Maizcay has died at Minumurra Stud in northern NSW.  The son of the Marscay sire Maizcay was put down aged 18 because of ongoing health issues.

Bred at Widden Stud, Our Maizcay was purchased as a foal at the 1993 Inglis Easter weanling sale and was resold for $7,000 at the 1994 NZ Magic Millions yearling sale.

Trained by Grant Searle, he won G3 events in the Ellerslie Eclipse Stakes and Trentham Wakefield Stakes.  He was added Listed wins at Trentham (Wellesley Stakes & NZ Magic Millions), Riccarton (Welcome Stakes) and Te Rapa (Fairview Ford Stakes).

A a spring three year-old, Our Maizcay made headlines with front-running victories in the G2 San Domenico, G3 Up and Coming and G2 Roman Consul Stakes before travelling to Melbourne where he took out the G2 Ascot Vale, G1 VicHealth Cup and G1 Caulfield Guineas.

Our Maizcay attempted to continue the winning streak in the 1995 Cox Plate but hit a brick wall at the turn and tailed off behind the eventual winner Octagonal.  He returned to Melbourne for the 1996 G1 Lightning Stakes at Flemington but suffered a tendon injury and was retired.

Our Maizcay stood at Glenlogan Park but, after an indifferent start to his stud career, was transferred to the New England district of NSW.  To date, Our Maizcay has sired 188 winners of over 600 races and $9.58 million.  His honour board has included the stakes winners Great Crusader, Marbine, Ours and Treviscay.
