Pin-hooking prospects at NZB South Island Sale

History shows NZ Bloodstock’s South Island Sale can be a lucrative opportunity for pin-hookers looking towards the NZB Ready to Run Sale in November.

A timely reminder came just a few weeks ago when St Peters Gift (St. Petersburg) won his second stakes race of the season in the Listed Macau Director’s Cup.

A $30,000 purchase from Leafland Stud at the 2008 South Island Sale, St Peters Gift was offered by Anzac Lodge at the 2008 Ready to Run Sale where he was bought for $100,000.

A half-sister to St Peters Gift by Towkay will be offered in this year’s South Island Sale by Leafland Stud at Lot 119.

In 2009 Cavallo Agistment Centre purchased a Spartacus colt at the South Island Sale for $1,400 and he was purchased by Singapore-based trainer Michael Freedman for $45,000. at the Ready to Run Sale.

At the same Sale, Newberry Farm offered a Rusty Spur colt which was purchased by NZB (as agent) for $21,000.  The colt was later offered at the Ready to Run Sale by Venture Thoroughbreds and was purchased by Robbie Heweston for $52,000.

Last year’s South Island Sale saw the trend continue with a number of buyers making successful pin-hooks from the South Island Sale. R & R Bloodstock made a healthy return when purchasing a Yamanin Vital colt from White Robe Lodge for $5,000.  The colt was later offered in the Delahunty Farm draft where he was purchased by Stephen Gray for $50,000.

Phill Cataldo purchased a His Royal Highness colt from Hedwood Thoroughbreds for $15,000.  The colt was later offered by Cavallo Agistment Centre at the Ready to Run Sale and was purchased by Terry Crommelin of Western Australia for $50,000.

Over the last few seasons New Zealand Ready to Run graduates have continued to prove themselves at Group 1 level in New Zealand, Australia and Asia.  With the increased size and strength of the international buying bench at the Ready to Run Sale, the market is strong and is growing.

The South Island Sale provides prospective buyers with a unique opportunity to purchase untried, sound and athletic two-year-olds from a proven Sale that produces Group 1 winning horses, and pre-train, breeze and prepare them for the Ready to Run Sale three months later.

New Zealand Bloodstock’s South Island Sale of Two-Year-Olds & Mixed Bloodstock will be held at Canterbury Agricultural Park, Christchurch on August 12 from 11am.
