Prevailing gave Tasmanian trainers David and Scott Brunton one of their greatest victories in the G3 Launceston Cup on Wednesday.
Prevailing (5g Secret Savings – Amulet by Entrepreneur) reeled in local champ Geegees Blackflash to score by a neck. “We came to this race with White Yard last year and had to settle for second,” Scott Brunton recalled. “I thought Geegees Blackflash was going to deny us again but our horse kept coming and got the result.”
Prevailing had to be paid up as a late entry after Dave Brunton omitted to enter the gelding. “It’s awesome,” Scott Brunton said. “Mum is one of the part-owners and I could have shot Dad when he forgot the nomination. But the other owners were really understanding.”
The five-year-old was once considered a horse that might win a couple of lower grade races but in the past 12 months he has been a work in progress for the Bruntons who maintained all along that he had staying potential.
The Bruntons took Prevailing on a trip to Victoria with star stablemate Lady Lynette during the spring carnival and he returned from the mainland to claim two in a row during November. The gelding began his Launceston Cup campaign in earnest with a second to The Cleaner in the Brighton Cup and, in his final lead-up, scored a two length victory in the Cascade Pale Ale Hcp.
Prevailing is from an unraced half-sister to G2 AJC Warwick Stakes winner Sir Dex. He was a $20,000 buy as a foal at the 2007 Inglis Great Southern Sale for Rick and Tina Polley who trade under the Whispering Sands banner.
Prevailing’s dam Amulet has foaled fillies by Al Samer, Oh Oklahoma and Desert King (2) since the Launceston Cup winner but, so far, none of them have even been named.
