The winners continued to roll in for Stromberg Carlson on the weekend.

Singapore sprinter Primera Espada improved his strike-rate to 5 wins from his last 10 starts with a brilliant victory at Kranji on Friday night.

The Raheen Stud sire completed an international treble in Queensland on Saturday when Little Miss Riches survived a protest to win her maiden and Backup Plan railed up to score at Toowoomba.

Primera Espada (5g Stromberg Carlson – Aback by Marauding) was backed into favouritism and duly delivered in a $75,000 Class 3 Stakes over 1000m for champion jockey Joao Moreira.

Moreira was content to sit three-wide before pressing the go-button in the home straight.  After a short struggle, he gained the ascendency to win by over a length.

Trainer Douglas Dragon went into the race confident after the gelding sparkled on the track earlier in the week.  “It was a good piece of work and he actually put weight on after the gallop,” Dragon said.  “He always tries his best.”

Dragon prepares him for the Aspyre Stable after the horse changed hands twice on the Gold Coast in 2008.

Raheen Stud sold him to Paul Beamish Bloodstock for $34,000 at the Magic Millions Summer yearling sale and he was pin-hooked for the Magic Millions 2YO HIT Sale late that year to make $53,000.

Primera Espada’s dam Aback was a Hawkesbury winner and she is a half-sister to Flemington winner Twisted Heart (Distorted Humor).

Moreira credited Doulas and his daughter Leticia for transforming the winner.  “Primera Espada is a genuine galloper,” Moreira said.  “He has certainly improved in his time up here and I don’t think he has finished winning yet.”
