Puissance de Lune firms for Melbourne Cup

NZ Bloodstock’s Caulfield Spring Weight-For-Age Championship kicked off with a bang when Puissance de Lune exploded to an effortless win in the G2 Lawrence Stakes (1400m) on Saturday.

Puissance De Lune (Ire) set a lofty standard for the rest of the carnival and is now a firming $5 favourite for the Melbourne Cup.  The Darren Weir-trained grey settled in the back half of the field before Glen Boss picked a path between runners in the straight.  He powered past pacemaker Ajeeb (NZ) to score by three-quarters of a length.

Boss claims the Shamardal stallion is one of the best horses he has ridden comparing him to the likes of Makybe Diva and So You Think (NZ).

Puissance De Lune (5h Shamardal – Princess Serena by Unbridled’s Song) is owned by Gerry Ryan and had won the LR Bendigo Cup (2400m) and G3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) during last year’s spring carnival.

Ryan tasted Melbourne Cup success with Americain and he sourced the Irish bred import for 90,000 euros at the 2011 Arqana Arc Sale.

The second leg of the NZ Bloodstock Spring WFA Championship is scheduled for the G1 NZB Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 31.  Recently elevated to Group 1 status, the Memsie is sure to attract a high quality field with headline gallopers such as Atlantic Jewel, Ferlax (NZ), Silent Achiever (NZ) and Carlton House.
