Qatar Racing seek Cox Plate Grand Slam

Sheikh Fahad al Thani won the 2011 Melbourne Cup and 2012 Caulfield Cup with Dunaden and he’s aiming for a Grand Slam in the 2013 Cox Plate.

The Qatar Racing principal has nominated Trade Storm for Australia’s weight-for-age championship at Moonee Valley in October.  The British bred galloper will run in the G1 Arlington Million later this month in the lead-up to a proposed trip Down Under.

Trade Storm (5h Trade Fair – Frisson by Slip Anchor) was initially owned by Universal Racing before changing hands in a private deal earlier this year.  Qatar Racing is a partnership involving Sheikh Fahad al Thani, Sheikh Hamad and Sheikh Suhaim.

Beginning his career in the hands of John Gallagher, Trade Storm broke his maiden on the third time of asking at Newbury prior to finishing sixth in the G2 Gimcrack Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Winning his first start as a three-year-old at Doncaster, Trade Storm enjoyed a number of good runs in stakes company that season before a stable switch to David Simcock.

As a four-year-old, Trade Storm best performances were rewarded with a victory at the York Ebor meeting and a second in the Shergar Cup Mile.

He has enjoyed a fantastic season this year winning two races in Meydan including the G2 Zabeel Stakes (1600m).  He then finished fourth in the G1 Dubai Duty Free (1800m).

His domestic campaign has included a fifth in the G1 Queen Anne Stakes and fourths in the G2 Summer Mile and G1 Sussex Stakes last week.

Trade Storm is one of three winners out of Frisson, a daughter of Listed winner Comic Talent (Pharly).  His fifth dam Night Off (Narrator) won the English 1000 Guineas and later foaled G3 winning sire Montekin (Mount Hagen).

His sire Trade Fair is due to start his seventh southern book at Serpentine-based Alwyn Park for a $4,950 (inc gst) service fee.
