Fears for the well-being of Rachel Alexandra were allayed on Monday when the champion mare and her Curlin foal were released from the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Kentucky.
Rachel Alexandra and the colt returned to Stonestreet Farm after she was treated for pain management related to the January 22 foaling.
“Rachel has proven to be an extraordinary mother and took to her feisty colt right away,” owner Barbara Banke said in a press release. “I’m a Rachel-chondriac. We are taking every precaution to ensure the mare and her foal are healthy and happy.”
Rachel Alexandra claimed 2009 USA Horse of the Year honours. She became the first filly in 85 years to win the G1 Preakness and the first filly to ever win the G1 Woodward Stakes.
Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d’Oro) is booked to visit Bernardini but no mention of a scheduled date for that mating was made in Banke’s press release.
