Fontelina will head to the G1 T J Smith at Eagle Farm in a fortnight after a brilliant win in the Listed Doomben Slipper (1350m) on Saturday.
Trained by Anthony Cummings, Fontelina was sent north in search of stakes races after an eye catching debut at Canterbury ten days ago. The raw recruit could not have been more impressive when racing away from his rivals at Doomben.
Fontelina (2c Testa Rossa – Decipher by Timber Country) led home a Magic Millions trifecta from local filly Lucky Morna (Ferocity) and Cindarockinrella (Fastnet Rock).
“He’s got a good will to win but has still got a lot to learn.” Cummings said. “He will certainly make the grade and the win was pleasing with the T J Smith in mind.”
The Testa Rossa colt was bred by Gerry Harvey’s Baramul Stud and was a $135,000 graduate of the Washpool Lodge draft at the 2010 Magic Millions HIT Sale. Cummings trains him for Edward O’Dwyer.
The Queensland based owner made the leader-board at the Magic Millions National weanling sale this week when parting with $150,000 for a Henrythenavigator filly foal.
Fontelina is a son of Vinery Stud’s G1 Magic Millions graduate Testa Rossa. His dam Decipher is a half sister to stakes performer Tingling as well as the dams of stakes winners Burberry and Stormy Miss.
Decipher foaled another Testa Rossa colt in New Zealand in September. She was then among the first mares covered by Tavistock (Montjeu) at Cambridge Stud last year.
Second dam Electrique (Zephyr Zip) was a G1 winner of the AJC Flight Stakes at Randwick and the STC Ansett Stakes at Rosehill in 1991-92.
