Boomer Bloodstock topped Day 1 and the FBAA leader-board at the Magic Millions National Foal Sale after the last of 383 lots found new homes on Thursday and Friday .
Coolmore Australia’s Fastnet Rock – Diademe colt made $650,000 to Boomer’s Craig Rounsefell who acknowledged the market had been very solid across the board. His colt is a younger brother to the $1 million yearling colt purchased by Mark Pilkington Bloodstock and Lindsay Park at Karaka in February.
“He’s a standout on pedigree and physique and will most likely be re-offered at the Magic Millions or Inglis Easter next year,” Rounsefell said. “He’s a strong, forward type and appears a more precocious type than his older brother.”
Records were smashed across the board for the Weanling section of the National Sale that runs through to June 7. Magic Millions reported turnover soared 23% to $24.17 million while the average climbed 21% to $63,116 off a strong clearance rate of 85%.
Belmont Bloodstock Agency appeared among the Top 10 buyers averaging $135,200. A Choisir filly from Singapore Horse of the Year Jolie’s Shinju filly led the way at $300,000.
“She’s by a proven, dual-hemisphere sire and the decision to buy was a ‘no-brainer’,” Belmont Bloodstock’s Damon Gabbedy said. “She’s a beautiful full-bodied filly with a lovely big strong hind-quarter.”
Gabbedy was coming off a double with debut filly Shapita (Foxwedge) and Route Eighty Eight (Written Tycoon) at Ascot last week.
Shapita (Foxwedge) races for a partnership that includes Gabbedy, Ray Meadowcroft and Jason Carone. A $60,000 buy at the 2017 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, she is the latest 2yo winner for trainer Simon Miller following Valour Road, Market Ruler, Lady Cosmology and Alpha Sky.
Sheamus Mills Bloodstock bought 13 foals including 7 for Palya Bloodstock (Ed & Clark McKeon) and Saconi Thoroughbreds (Michael Christian).
The Victorian partners spent $526,000 with fillies by Sebring ($150,000) and Pierro ($130,000) the highlights on the Gold Coast. Sebring is a son of More Than Ready and his filly is related to More Than Ready’s G1 Victoria Derby winner Prized Icon.
Mills also paid $200,000 for a Spirit of Boom colt when the McKeons and Christian linked up with Rosemont Stud’s Anthony Mithen on Day 2. His dam Pegasus Miss (More Than Ready) is a half-sister to stakes winners Metallic Crown (G3 Ming Dynasty Hcp) and Snitzpeg (LR Poseidon Stakes).
Rosemont sold a Snitzel colt on behalf of the McKeons for $625,000 at last year’s Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale. Racing as Prairie Fire, he won the LR Talindert Stakes at Flemington in February and was fourth home a week later in the G1 Blue Diamond.
Bluegrass Bloodstock graduates are on a roll with Moss ‘N’ Dale (NZ) leading the charge towards the G1 Stradbroke Hcp on June 9. The Kiwi market has been a profitable connection for Lenny Russo and his local link with Josh Rodder’s JR Thoroughbreds saw four foals leaving the Gold Coast for Melbourne.
A colt from the first crop of Vinery sire Press Statement sold for $110,000 and filling out the quartet were fillies by Dundeel and Headwater and anther colt by Zebedee.
Vinery’s USA conceived grey filly by Tapit made $75,000 to the bid of Blue Sky Bloodstock. That was money well spent among the 8 foals knocked down to Julian Blaxland. Her dam Caminadora (More Than Ready) won a G3 Regret Stakes at Churchill Downs.
Blue Sky graduate Lean Mean Machine rates among the main players for the G2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes at Doomben this Saturday. The Zoustar colt is from LR Tommy Smith Slipper winner She’s Meaner and he looked the part when making $250,000 at the 2017 Gold Coast Magic Millions.
Pinhook Bloodstock agent Dave Mee bid for colts by No Nay Never and Kermadec at $50,000 each. The latter is a first-crop son of Darley’s Group 1 winning miler from Savabella Rose (Savabeel).
His pedigree page is dominated by the Savabeel brothers Brambles (G1 Queensland Derby), Lincoln Blue (G3 Wellington Stakes) and Lopov (LR Kalgoorlie Cup). Not surprisingly, the colt was bought for a client across the Tasman.
Pinhook’s Aussie expat Super Hoppy broke through in Hong Kong last week for clients of trainer Danny Shum. Mee sourced the Captain Sonador gelding from Queensland where he was unbeaten in three starts for trainer Matty Kropp.
