Red Ora has staged another winning reunion for a team of Aquinas College old boys at Ascot.
The Mungrup Stud bred gelding had won on debut in December and struck again in the Westspeed Hcp (1000m) on Wednesday.
Red Ora (3g Due Sasso – Friartriar by Blackfriars) raced away in the straight to score by a couple of lengths from Crown Choice (Not A Single Doubt). “He’s a beautiful type and is a lovely horse in the making,” trainer Dan Morton predicted. “He blundered at the start and then got some cover before Jarrad (Noske) flushed out at the 600m.
“He’s still a bit new and there’s plenty of improvement to come.”
Red Ora is the final foal of Friartriar and is from the immediate family of Group 1 winners Scenic Blast and Gilded Venom.
Mungrup Stud owner Gray Williamson races the gelding with Damien Cooper, Michael O’Brien, Michael, Henriks, Mark Abercromby and Peter Price and he was happy to hear Morton’s comments after their first horse didn’t come up to expectations.
“Dad was under pressure to provide a nice horse for his old class mates,” Williamson’s daughter Ann Croucher said. “He picked Red Ora as a replacement for their first horse and it’s turned out really well.
“It’s been a fabulous excuse for the old class buddies to stay in contact. They’ve had a brilliant time and it looks like there’s more excitement to come.”
