Rewilding fatality at Ascot

Saturday’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot was marred by the fatal breakdown of Godolphin colt Rewilding.

Rewilding went into the prestigious event after G1 victories in the Dubai Sheema Classic and Prince of Wales Stakes.  He defeated So You Think last time out at Royal Ascot and started a 3/1 second favourite behind Arc de Triomphe winner Workforce.

Rewilding (4c Tiger Hill – Darara by Top Ville) shattered his left front cannon bone two furlongs from home and was euthanised immediately.

Sheikh Mohammed’s bloodstock advisor John Ferguson paid 500,000gns for Rewilding at the 2008 Tattersalls October yearling sale.  His older half-sister Dar Re Mi won Group 1 races in England, Ireland, France and Dubai for Sir Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Watership Down Stud.

His older half-brother Darazari was a G2 winner in France before transferring to Lindsay Park to add an Australian G1 in the STC Ranvet Stakes.

Frankie Dettori sustained foot and knee injuries following the fall and he also suffered whiplash.  He is hoping to be fit for the Glorious Goodwood meeting this week.
