Exciting filly Into The Abyss will be set for a stakes race in Sydney instead of heading to the Gold Coast after her record-breaking victory at Randwick.

The DGR Thoroughbred Services (FBAA) graduate was very impressive on debut in the Hyland Boxing Day Sale Hcp (1000m) on Boxing Day. She surged clear of some outclassed rivals under Glyn Schofield clocking a class-record 58.41s.

“I was a little bit worried she might be a bit soft first-up,” trainer John Thompson admitted. “She looked a little bit pretty but she’s a nice filly and quality takes you a long way.”

The Foxwedge filly is a sister to Moonee Valley winner Aghna and cost DGR principal Duncan Ramage $240,000 at the 2017 Gold Coast Magic Millions on behalf of Michael Alexeeff, Matthew Sandblom and Dato Tan Chin Nam.

Into The Abyss entered Magic Millions 2YO Classic markets at $26 but Thompson indicated her immediate goal will be the G3 Widden Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on February 3. “She only has $27,000 in prizemoney so probably won’t make the field for the Gold Coast,” Thompson said. “We don’t want to rush her. The owners are breeders so they would rather get black-type.”

Thompson took over her training in May. “I was foreman for Bart Cummings when Dr Alexeef had horses at Leilani Lodge,” Thompson recalled. “When James Cummings went to Godolphin they had to spread their horses out and this filly came to me.”

Into The Abyss was part of a winning treble for DGR graduates on Boxing Day.

Equipped (More Than Ready) broke through for several long-term owners at Newcastle and Made In Russia (Street Cry) completed a running double at Morphettville this month for China Horse Club.

Ramage is also confident Indisputable (Redoute’s Choice) will salute soon despite fading from view second-up at Newcastle on Boxing Day. He was beaten a short-head on debut at Hawkesbury and time is on his side.

The John O’Shea trained colt is a son of Judged (High Yield) who won her maiden at Kembla as a March 3yo before progressing to Group 3 victories in the Research Stakes and Liverpool City Cup.
