Rommel 3yo winners flying at Ascot

Rommel is flying with four winners in consecutive meetings at Ascot and that’s good news for vendors who have entered 15 of his yearlings for the 2025 Perth Magic Millions Sale.

The Ridgeport Farm resident is represented by a fleet-footed 3yo division this season.  His precocious filly Desert Whisper was a four-length winner last Wednesday and Horcrux put a space on his rivals in the Happy Birthday Callie Burton Hcp (1100m) on Saturday.

Horcrux appreciated a drop back in grade and the addition of blinkers when racing first-up for the Ladbrokes Racing Club and trainer Simon Miller.  He had been thereabouts before a break at Listed level in the Belgravia, Fairetha and Placid Ark Stakes in October – November.

“He worked well with the blinkers on Tuesday morning and was always in control today,” stable rep Kelly Kinninmont said.  “We were a bit worried pre-race because he came in a bit above himself.  But he jumped and Jordie (Turner) rode a great race in front.”

Rommel sired him from Magic And Danger (Stratum) who is from the immediate family of Kiwi mare Imananabaa (Anabaa) who won at Group 1 level in the 2008 Railway Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie.

Magic And Danger has a first-crop colt by Mogumber Park sire Marine One (Capitalist) on the ground at Bullsbrook and she was bred back to Rommel in October.

Horcrux was bred and sold by Mogumber Park for $105,000 at the 2023 Perth Magic Millions.  Saturday’s result improved his bank to $174,000 with Westspeed Bonuses tipping in $81,000.  He will be set for another big pay-day in the $250,000 RL Magic Millions 3YO Classic (1200m) at Pinjarra on February 15.

“He pinged the lids and landed in front,” Turner reported.  “That wasn’t the plan but he was just too strong.  He’s still immature and will get much better in time.”

Stablemate Bold Hero completed a double for Rommel and Miller in the MCA Hcp (1500m).  Bred and sold in partnership by Ridgeport manager Marge Ojapold, he made $60,000 at the 2022 Perth Magic Millions.

Ridgeport Holdings has entered 7 of the 15 Rommel yearlings catalogued for the Perth Magic Millions next month.  Other vendors include Einoncliff Park, Clare Downs, J Farms, Greenfields, Price Thoroughbreds, Alwyn Park and Mogumber Park (2).
