Stratum sired another first-crop feature winner when Rose Of Scotland caused an upset in the Shaw Magic Millions 2yo Classic in Launceston on Wednesday.
Rose Of Scotland (2f Stratum – Ares De Lago by Encosta de Lago) defeated odds-on favourite Strike The Tiger by three lengths and the victory more than made amends for her unlucky second in the Alfa Bowl in November.
The Charlie Goggin trained filly was a $47,500 buy for Prime Thoroughbreds syndicator Joe O’Neill at the 2009 Adelaide Magic Millions. She was sold by Kambula Stud and has already paid her way after banking $60,000 yesterday.
O’Neill revealed she will now head to South Australia for the local version of the Magic Millions Classic which is worth $200,000. “She’s off to Adelaide provided she pulls up well,” O’Neill said. “I told Charlie I would buy him a nice filly and we were lucky because I valued her at $80,000.”
Stratum stands at Widden Stud and his first feature winner arrived on Australia Day when Crystal Lily was a Listed winner of the Blue Diamond Preview at Caulfield. The Contract Racing filly can earn more black-type in the Listed Chairman’s Stakes at Caulfield this Saturday.
Stratum (Redoute’s Choice) was purchased by Paul Perry at the 2004 Gold Coast Magic Millions for $320,000 and he went on to win a Golden Slipper and over $2.24 million before retiring to Widden.
He has been represented by 5 winners so far this season which places him third on the first-season sires’ table behind Jet Spur (7) and Snitzel (6).
