Ruler sting signs off season at Belmont

Universal Ruler filly Scorpion Ruler is making pleasing progress in her third prep for Port Kennedy trainer Josh Krispyn.

Scorpion Ruler had won at Bunbury in October and February before signing off her 3yo season with a productive rails run in the Jorja King Hcp (1000m) at Belmont on Wednesday.  Lucy Fiore was aboard for the first time on raceday and she saved ground behind the leader Mythical Miss (Patronize) before taking advantage of the cutaway at the top of the straight.

“I came here confident today after adding blinkers and removing the bar-plates,” Krispin said.  “And the soft going wasn’t a problem compared to the heavy conditions here last start.  It was her final chance to win a 3yo Westspeed Platinum bonus and we also get a breeders bonus so now I can pay off my car.”

Krispyn bred her using Scenic Lodge sire Universal Ruler over Northerly Gale (Cape Cross) who won three Ascot sprints for Hana Dickson.  The mare is three-from-three at stud following Scorpion Stormz (Ouqba) and Tramontane (Universal Ruler).  Her new-season 2yo filly is by Rommel and she was covered by A Lot (USA) last September.

It’s the family of Juanmo (Flying Spur) who was a Group 1 winner of the T J Smith Classic and QTC Sires’ Produce Stakes for trainer Alan Bailey at the 2001 Brisbane winter carnival.

Scorpion Ruler had firmed into a $3.30 favourite and Fiore was happy to be reacquainted after trialling her as a younger horse.  “She travelled really well behind the speed and the leader towed her into the race.  And that gave us a nice sweep into the straight.”

Troy Blechynden manages a large syndicate in the filly and he also manages the Krispin-trained stablemates Alaskalot (A Lot) who doubled up in town last year and Sir Dreamalot (A Lot) who won the LR Supremacy Stakes (1000m) at Ascot in March.

Universal Ruler also sired King Cartel to win the Robak Photography Hcp (1400m) at Belmont on Wednesday.  He’s prepared by Mitch Pateman and had won a Belmont juvenile 12 months ago for Darren McAuliffe.  Bred by Grant McLearie, he’s out of the Steve Wolfe-trained provincial winner Miss Somebody (Demerit).  The mare has a new-season 2yo filly by Universal Ruler and was covered by Playing God last November.

Universal Ruler (Scenic) was runner-up to Playing God on the 2023-24 WA sires’ premiership table with career-best stats in all three categories – 52 individual winners of 91 races for earnings of $4,060,299.
