Reliable galloper Scapolo (NZ) broke through for his first stakes victory in the G2 Coupland’s Bakeries Mile (1600m) at Riccarton on Wednesday.
Scapolo (4g Bachelor Duke – Kadesa by Zabeel) crossed the field from an outside barrier and the win was in safe keeping a long way out. He scored by over a length from The Solitaire (O’Reilly) and Brave Centaur (O’Reilly).
Trained by Kevin Myers at Wanganui, the gelding has only been unplaced once in a 14-start career that includes travel across the North and South Islands along with two Australian campaigns.
“He had done everything right heading into the race so we were confident,” stated trainer Kevin Myers. “He will have a few weeks out and then we will probably go back to Melbourne or Brisbane.
“He was a nice walker as a yearling and that caught my eye, and he is still a bit immature so there is still room for improvement.”
Scapolo is raced by Anne, Khalif, Rick, Sandy and Teneka Hill after they bought him for $40,000 from The Oaks Stud. He was a last-start winner at Otaki and has now earned $291,420 in prizemoney.
