Safeguard a perfect source for stakes winners in Perth

Safeguard has an outstanding book lined up at Mogumber Park this season and there was a timely update for one of his mares when Mississippian won at Northam on Thursday.

Mississippian (Oratorio) was appearing first-up after a six-month spell and was a class above his rivals for owner-breeder Bob Peters in the Gannons Racing Colours Hcp (1100m).  He had form around Liberty’s Gem in stakes races during the 2014 Ascot summer carnival and justified a long odds-on quote with a convincing two-length victory.

Peters also bred and owned his older half-sister Elite Belle (Canny Lad) to a Group 1 victory in the Railway Stakes last year.  Tragically, she died on a flight to Melbourne in January.

“We bought their dam Mississippi Belle earlier this year and she is booked into Safeguard,” Mogumber Park owner Colin Brown said.  “She’s a Marooned mare and is due to foal a Testa Rossa for us later this month.”

Mississippi Belle is also the dam of LR Pinjarra Cup winner Battle Emblem (Second Empire) and her record at stud will continue to improve with a High Chaparral 2yo filly named Mississippi Delta and a yearling colt by Pierro.

“Putting Safeguard over Mississippi Belle will hopefully continue that strike-rate,” Brown added.  “He’s out of a Canny Lad mare and Elite Belle was by Canny Lad so it’s an interesting cross.

“Safeguard has been a pleasure to handle while covering his first mares this week.  We stand him in partnership with Neville Duncan and he is sending many of his best mares, too.”

Among mares already booked into Safeguard are stakes winners Capozzene (Capote), Jestatune (Rory’s Jester), Zanella (Ihtiram) & Answers Are (Xaar), the dams of stakes winners Uate & Malavio and full or half-sisters to Group 1 winners No Wine No Song, Grand Zulu, Imananabaa & Arapaho Miss.

The Mogumber newcomer was a Group 3 winner of the Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) at Randwick and Vain Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield.  He’s a son of champion stallion Exceed And Excel from G1 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Preserve – she is a half-sister to Darley sire Denman who has already sired five stakes winners from his first crop.

It’s a precocious pedigree and perfect source for stakes winning two year-olds of the future in Perth.

Safeguard is standing for an $8,800 (inc gst) service fee at Mogumber Park and broodmare owners can contact Colin Brown for more information on 0408 251 880.
