Mogumber Park stallion Safeguard posted another personal best at the NZB Ready To Run Sale on Thursday.
His colt from Kerimba (Sinndar) was knocked down for $300,000 which eclipsed his previous PB of $150,000 for a horse sold at public auction. The new leader had been pin-hooked for $75,000 from Mogumber Park at this year’s Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
Warwick Farm trainer Amanda Turner had been active on Day 1 at Te Rapa and her shopping list expanded when the Safeguard colt was the first horse to parade as Lot 161 on Day 2. “I’m very excited and can’t wait to get him home,” Turner said. “He was consigned by Woburn Stud who do a fabulous job in preparing their horses!”
“Some of my older horses are not long from retiring so the stable needs some new blood. I have quite a few clients interested in the Safeguard. We will decide whether to keep him in work or tip him out after they fly back to Sydney. He probably needs some warm weather after wintering in New Zealand!”
The colt is a three-quarter brother to Stakes winner Cathay Lady (Exceed And Excel) and the Stakes placed Extensible (Exceed And Excel). He is also a half-brother to My Sugar (Deep Field) who has won four of his last five starts in Hong Kong.
Woburn Farm’s Adrian Stanley placed a $150,000 reserve on him and expected up to $200,000. “He’s nicely balanced, correct, athletic and should get going as a two year-old,” Stanley predicted. “Clients of mine pinhooked him in Perth. They got Peter O’Brien (Segenhoe Stud) to buy the horse and it’s turned into a great result today.”
Mogumber Park’s Colin Brown bred and raised him at Bullsbrook and he also welcomed a Safeguard – Kerimba filly in August. The mare was bred back to Rommel. “Our boy ‘Joergon’ has certainly grown into a stunning horse,” Brown said. “It was obviously a great prep by Adrian and we will follow him closely with Amanda.”
Safeguard’s first Stakes winner Buzzoom will attempt a PB of her own in the G2 WA Guineas (1600m) at Ascot on Saturday. She was a brilliant winner of the LR Burgess Queen Stakes (1400m) on Melbourne Cup Day before peaking at the furlong when runner-up to Searchin’ Roc’s in the G3 Champion Fillies (1600m) last Saturday.
Fillies have won three of the last four WA Guineas – 2020 (Watch Me Dance), 2018 (Arcadia Queen), 2017 (Perfect Jewel) – and Buzzoom had been quoted at $4.80 for the classic which carries prizemoney of $500,000.
