Scarf won Heat 2 of the MRC Swettenham Stud Summer Championship (1500m) at Sandown on Saturday but Sheikh Mohammed’s homebred won’t run in the Final on January 28.
Scarf (4g Lonhro – Muffle by Quest For Fame) will be part of the Darley team travelling off-shore for the Dubai carnival. “That’s it for him in Australia,” stable foreman Paul Snowden said. “He had been working well and I was confident he would be hard to beat as long as he relaxed. It worked out really well.”
One of the few greys by Lonhro, Scarf shadowed front-runner King Cobweb and then scooted clear for an emphatic victory over Let’s Be Happy (Brief Truce) and Bocuse (Quest For Fame).
Scarf had been racing out of Darley’s Sydney stable and had won the LR Winter Stakes at Rosehill in July. “He was based in Melbourne as a younger horse but didn’t race down here,” Snowden revealed. “He fractured a hind leg early on and only raced once as a two year-old.”
The winner is by Darley’s reigning champion sire Lonhro and is from an unraced half-sister to the dams of Sydney stakes winners Jeremiad (Octagonal) and Dysphonia (Lonhro).
Darley sold his dam Muffle for $5,500 to Queensland based Adour Stud at the 2009 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale. Since changing hands, she has foaled an Ad Valorem filly and a Real Saga colt.
Scarf joins Over Quota (Testa Rossa) at the top of the table for the Swettenham Stud Summer Championship. The Mark Webb trained gelding won Heat 1 at Sandown on Wednesday.
The Championship comprises 10 Heats and a $100,000 Final at Betfair Park on January 28. The prize package also includes a trophy and a free service to Swettenham Stud’s exciting shuttle sire Equiano which is valued at $16,500.
