A Scat Daddy colt commanded top price of $575,000 during Day 1 of the Fasig-Tipton 2YO Sale in Maryland on Monday.
Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert will prepare him for Ernie Moody’s Mercedes Stables. The colt is the first foal out of the unraced Congaree mare Magical Mist who is a half sister to G1 winner J P’s Gusto (Successful Appeal). He breezed 200m in 10.20s prior to the Sale.
“Scat Daddy has done a lot of good things,” Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms director Donato Lanni said. “Bob came out here after the Preakness Stakes and he really liked the horse. He had worked fast and is a really well-made horse.”
The session topper was bred in Kentucky by John and Susan Sykes. They bought his dam Magical Mist, when she was carrying the colt, for $14,000 at the 2010 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky February Sale.
A $210,000 Exchange Rate colt was the second-highest-priced horse during the first session. Zayat Stables and Southern Equine Stables bought the colt who is from the stakes winning Dynaformer mare Maliziosa. The owners also race Bodemeister who finished second in this year’s Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.
The most expensive filly was a $200,000 daughter of Harlan’s Holiday out of G2 winner Ruby Surprise (Farma Way). Trainer Lynn Whiting signed the ticket for the half sister to feature Free Flying Soul (Quiet American).
Fasig-Tipton reported the Day 1 average price grew 3.6% to $47,067 while the median price rose 8% to $27,000. The clearance rate dipped 5 points to 74%.
