Schweida winners for Vinery

Trainer Kelly Schweida prepared a Vinery double when Better Than Ready and Eureka Jack were successful at Doomben on Monday.

Better Than Ready (3c More Than Ready – Sally’s World by Agnes World) won the Darley Australia Hcp over 1110 metres and Eureka Jack (5g Testa Rossa – Eureka Jewel by Semipalatinsk) scored a narrow victory in the Iona College at 2200 metres.

Better Than Ready was a $140,000 buy at the 2011 Inglis Easter yearling sale.  He is by Vinery champion More Than Ready from  a winning half-sister to stakes winners Publishing (Testa Rossa) and Miss Mooney Mooney (Redoute’s Choice).

Schweida was relieved when the good looking colt staged a last-to-first victory after connections opted for a crucial gear change and an overhaul of riding tactics.  “I never lost faith in Better Than Ready,” Schweida said.  “The way he’s just won is what he’s been showing us all along.

“He settled a lot better after we took the visor off and put a cross-over noseband on him.  Ric (McMahon) said he’s much better ridden behind so I decided to listen to his advice because he was pretty adamant.”

The Listed Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on October 20 is an option Schweida is considering for Better Than Ready.  “A trip away would help his development as a racehorse but I might just keep him here and build on this win,” Schweida said.  “He still does a lot wrong but the penny has finally dropped.”

Eureka Jack is by Vinery sire Testa Rossa and is a younger half-brother to LR Cranbourne Cup winner Sermon (Octagonal).  Their dam Eureka Jewel was top-class with feature wins to her credit in the G2 Kewney Stakes at Flemington and G3 Adrian Knox Stakes at Randwick.
