Shamardal sired a serious prospect for Europe’s 2011 classics after Casamento won the G1 Racing Post Trophy on Saturday and he was at it again when Dubai Prince scored a G2 victory in the Killavullan Stakes at Leopardstown on Monday.
Dubai Prince (2c Shamardal – Desert Frolic by Persian Bold) had warmed up for the late-season feature with a debut win at Gowran Park last month. He defeated Seville (Galileo) that day and the Coolmore colt franked the form when he was runner-up to Casamento in the Racing Post Trophy.
Dubai Prince started a 4-9 favourite second time out and swept to the front before the furlong marker to defeat Dundalk stakes winner Warning Flag (War Front) by over three lengths.
“He is a very high-class performer and 1400m is too short for him,” trainer Dermot Weld said. “I need to talk to John Ferguson and Sheikh Mohammed about the Criterium de Saint-Cloud.”
The French Group 1 is run over 2000 metres and is scheduled for November 13. Connections should get an opportunity to discuss the colt’s immediate future in Melbourne next week.
Dubai Prince was a 48,000gns foal when sold at Tattersalls in November 2008. His dam Desert Frolic was a prolific winner up to 2600m and she is a half-sister to Darley’s Group 1 winning sire Storming Home.
