Newgate Farm has signed a second son of Written Tycoon for stud duties with the news Winning Rupert will join its roster this year.
The Aberdeen-based stud will also stand Written Tycoon’s G1 Golden Slipper winner Capitalist.
Winning Rupert (3c Written Tycoon – Winaura by Show A Heart) was purchased by Newgate, China Horse Club and a syndicate of leading breeders after losing his unbeaten record in the Magic Millions Guineas on January 14. He pulled up with a bone chip in a knee and was retired immediately.
Prepared by Bjorn Baker, Winning Rupert showed that his exceptional speed would ultimately take him all the way to the top. “From a training point of view he is the fastest horse I’ve ever put a saddle on,” said Baker. “He was just so natural, we never had to use blinkers or urge him in any way to get him to show us speed. He had raw ability in spades. A gifted athlete.”
A Group 2 winner of the Champagne Stakes (1200m) at two, Winning Rupert was nothing short of a sensation this season winning the LR Golden Edition Stakes and G3 Vo Rogue Plate in track-record time.
“Standing Winning Rupert is a no brainer,” Newgate Director of Stallions and Sales Bruce Slade said. “He won five from six and broke two track records. His wins were impressive to the eye and impressive on the clock. We will be supporting him heavily along with many of Australia’s leading breeders.”
