Sepoy maintains undefeated record at Caulfield

Champion colt Sepoy is set for another record-breaking campaign after a stunning first-up victory in the Listed Vain Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.

Sepoy (3c Elusive Quality – Watchful by Danehill) was last seen claiming the G1 Golden Slipper at Rosehill in April  “He’s just a super horse,” trainer Peter Snowden said.  “He was never under pressure and just pricked his ears in front.”

The Darley homebred was eased down by Kerrin McEvoy to score by more than two lengths from Golden Archer (Rock Of Gibraltar) and Grand Britannia (Dash For Cash).

Sepoy remains undefeated in four runs at Caulfield.  He won the G1 Blue Diamond Stakes there in February and then became the first horse to complete the Golden Slipper double since Courtza in 1989.

He is from the penultimate southern crop of Darley sire Elusive Quality who shuttled to Australia until 2008.

Sepoy’s dam Watchful is a sister to G1 Queensland Derby winner Camarena (Danehill).  Her four winners to date include Elusive Quality filly Camarilla who was a G1 winner of the AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes.

Watchful has a 2yo colt by Dubai Destination.

Darley has forecast an international campaign for Sepoy after the spring carnival.  Hw will start next in the G2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on September 3 followed by a possible test against older horses in the G1 Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley on September 30.
