Joplin is the latest winner among a rising tide of promising three year-olds by Host (Chi).
The Swettenham Stud sire edged closer to the lead in the Australian second-season winners’ premiership when Joplin scored a front-running victory at Ballarat on Thursday. The Colin and Cindy Alderson trained filly cruised home by three lengths under Brian Higgins in the En Dees Maiden Plate (1400m).
Host has now sired 7 individual winners from 16 starters this season which puts him right behind the leader Casino Prince (8 winners from 39 starters).
“The way she quickened up in the straight was really impressive,” Cindy Alderson said. “Brian said she was always travelling like a winner and had them covered a long way out.”
Cindy and her father Colin will monitor the winner’s recovery before making any plans. “She went through a rather extension education and will probably only have another run before we give her a break. Whatever happens, she will come back a much better filly in the autumn.”
Joplin (3f Host – Rising Eagle by Danehill) was in the market after an unlucky fifth on debut at Cranbourne earlier this month. She is raced by Robert Proctor in partnership with Shane Braddick, Sam Furno, Greg Lavopa and David Reddish.
Proctor owned her dam Rising Eagle who is a sister to G1 Golden Slipper winner Ha Ha. The mare has thrown five winners and her second foal Golden Eagle (Zabeel) is the dam of Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed.
Host (Hussonet) represents tremendous value at a $7,500 (inc gst) service fee at Swettenham Stud compared to other second-season sires like Bernardini ($55,000), Casino Prince ($27,500), Magnus ($17,600) and Haradasun ($16,500),
Leading breeder Rick Jamieson is one of Host’s strongest supporters and he believes the Hussonet cross with the My Babu sireline will be particularly productive. Mares influenced by Sir Tristram and Century immediately come to mind.
Host’s unbeaten stakes winner Philippi is a Jamieson homebred and the colt’s second dam is from a Century mare.
