Sheikh Hamdan has retired his 2008 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Albertus Maximus to Shadwell Farm in Kentucky.
Albertus Maximus (7h Albert the Great – Chasethewild Wind by Forty Niner) is from a half sister to French champion King Charlemagne who shuttled to Australia until 2006.
“We realized that Albertus was not going to return to his Group 1 form,” Shadwell Farm general manager Rick Nichols said. “So the decision was made to retire him.”
Albertus Maximus won the Dirt Mile on a synthetic surface at Santa Anita and the G1 Donn Hcp on dirt at Gulfstream Park. He also captured the Windy Sands Handicap at Del Mar.
Albertus Maximus first raced for breeders Brandon and Marianne Chase before his sale to Shadwell. He earned over $1,32 million.
