Showcase Star Turn colt sold to Hong Kong

A Star Turn colt offered by Miranda Park (as agent) doubled his reserve when knocked down for $150,000 at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale on Tuesday.

“He was on the market at $75,000 but I felt confident he would sell for more after parading for several key people,” Miranda Park’s Gary O’Meara said.  “He has a fantastic temperament and really came on during the prep.  He’s a lovely type and will keep improving being a November foal.”

Catalogued as Lot 746 from the Macedon Ranges nursery, the chestnut colt was second on the leader-board during the Showcase session. He’s from Filomena’s Grace (Love Conquers All) and is a full-brother to the Bjorn Baker-trained 3yo filly Shezanalister who signed off her first campaign winning a Bathurst all-aged maiden in December.

Star Turn, like fellow Vinery sire All Too Hard, is being targeted by Hong Kong buyers following the success of his stock led by Group 3 Sha Tin Vase winner Cordyceps Six.  Vinery sold a Star Turn colt from Beechal (Lonhro) for $240,000 at the Gold Coast Magic Millions to David Lui (Sweetbriar Equine) and the Goldfinder Equine Fund.

Frankie Lor unveiled an early winner by Star Turn when Beauty Destiny was a front-running trial winner under Zac Purton at Sha Tin on Tuesday.  He was registered as Spitzer in Australia and was exported in December after winning a Rosehill 3yo trial for Team Hawkes in October.

Richard Gibson also prepared another impressive trialist by Star Turn on Tuesday when Star Club won untouched down the straight under Alexis Badel.  Bred by Spendthrift Australia, he’s a stablemate of Champion All Too Hard Sprinter Wellington and is a half-brother to Keep Reading (Headwater) who is a three-time Morphettville winner for Hong Kong-based agent David Price.

Meanwhile, Star Turn maintained his winner-a-day strike-rate in March when Tribeca Star and Stellar Magic completed a running double as short-priced favourites at Doomben on Wednesday.

Tribeca Star was last out of the gates but first home in the Eureka 3yo Maiden (1200m) for trainer Matt Dunn.  He had been placed in all three starts at Rosehill and Warwick Farm (2) during an initial prep earlier this season and was a class above his rivals first-up in Brisbane.  He was a $90,000 buy for Dunn and agent Neil Jenkinson from Vinery at the 2021 Inglis Classic Sale.

Stellar Magic travelled beautifully in the box seat for Ben Thompson and her consistency was rewarded in the Magic Millions March Sale Hcp (1110m).  Trained by Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted for Proven Thoroughbreds, she was winning for the third time in town after graduating for $100,000 from Yarraman Park’s draft to the 2020 Inglis Classic Sale.

Stellar Magic also earned black-type when filling out a Star Turn quinella behind Miss Hipstar in last year’s Dalrello Stakes (LR, 1000m) at Eagle Farm.

Hoofnote: Miranda Park’s Headwater filly from Supriym Story (Lot 180) was passed-in for $100,000 at the Inglis Premier Sale on Sunday but has been leased to trainer Lee Curtis who prepared her older half-sister Lasqueti Spirit to win the 2016 VRC Oaks (Gr.1, 2500m).
